Hurricane Florence Debris Collection: Second and Final Pass to Begin Nov. 5

Oak Island, NC – The second and final pass for Hurricane Florence debris collection in the Town of Oak Island will begin Monday, Nov. 5, and citizens with additional debris should put it by the road no later than Nov. 5.

The second pass for debris collection is expected to move much quicker than the initial pass, and there will not be additional passes after the one beginning Nov. 5. Citizens with additional Hurricane Florence debris should place it by the road before the Nov. 5 collection begins to ensure it is picked up.

Debris should be placed in the right-of-way – between the sidewalk and the road, or on the edge of the property near the curb or edge of the road if there is not a sidewalk. Debris placed too far from the edge of the road might not be picked up if it cannot be reached by collection equipment. Debris should not be placed on or near fire hydrants, water meters, trees, poles or other structures.

Citizens should sort debris into six categories:

  1. Normal household trash
  2. Vegetative debris (leaves, lots, plants, tree branches – not bagged)
  3. Construction and demolition debris (building materials, carpet, drywall, furniture, lumber, mattresses, plumbing)
  4. Appliances and white goods (air conditioners, dishwashers, freezers, refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers and water heaters)
  5. Electronics (computers, radios, stereos, televisions, and other devices with a cord)
  6. Household hazardous waste (cleaning supplies, batteries, lawn chemicals, oils, oil-based paints and stains, and pesticides)
