Test Results Show 1,4-Dioxane in Brunswick County’s Northwest Water Treatment Plant Below Detectable Level in Treated Water

From Brunswick County  – Testing of Brunswick County's raw and treated water at the Northwest Water Treatment Plant has found 1,4-Dioxane at 1.3 parts per billion in raw water but at less than detectable levels in treated.  Testing of water samples taken by Brunswick County on July 5 show the presence of 1,4-Dioxane at the Northwest Water Treatment Plant, which draws water from the Cape Fear River, at less than 0.028 parts per billion (PPB), or less than the lowest detectible level, in the treated water, and at 1.3 PPB in the raw water. Latest info from Brunswick County regarding GenX

From Brunswick County: Based on samples taken by Dr. Detlef Knappe and others in August 2014, but not published until November 2016, levels of a Perfluoroalkyl Ether Carboxylic Acid (PFECA) known as GENX and similar PFECAs were found in the Cape Fear River and in drinking water produced by the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority.  Average levels of GENX found in  the Cape Fear River on August 14, 2014 were 631 nanograms per Liter (631 parts per trillion).  The median value was 304 nanograms per Liter.  Additional testing of Cape Fear Public Utilities water within the treatment process indicated that ... Beach Day -- July 1st Join Oak Island as we celebrate Beach Day, part of the NC Fourth of July Festival, on Saturday, July 1st at Middleton Park (SE 46th St.), the Cabana beach area, and the Kevin Bell Skate Park. Info on Quality of Drinking Water available through Brunswick County

The Town of Oak Island takes the issue of water quality very seriously. Town leaders and staff have been watching closely the recent reports of the chemical GenX in the Cape Fear River. The Town purchases water from Brunswick County, and we will work with County officials however we can to ensure that our drinking water is safe. The meeting is open to the public, but there will not be a public comment period as this is a budget workshop.
