State Fire Marshal’s office joins with Oak Island, Caswell Beach in smoke alarm canvass on Oct. 28

  RALEIGH – Chief State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor and state fire prevention specialist Jan Parker will join Oak Island Fire Department Chief Chris Anselmo, Yaupon Beach Volunteer Fire Department Chief James Criscoe, and other firefighters in canvassing the region Oct.28 to make sure residents have smoke alarms. “Smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a fire in half,” said N.C. Town awarded $8 million for Sea Turtle Habitat Restoration Project

From today's press conference: We were notified Friday that we will be getting just over $8 million for the Sea Turtle Habitat Restoration Project. This was a beach nourishment project done in 2000/2001, following Hurricane Floyd in 1999, and it was the first of its kind. This project was beneficial in two ways – it provided more beach for endangered sea turtles to nest, and it also helped part of our beach start to recover following storm damage. Winter schedule for trash and recycling collection starts in October for beach areas

Beginning the first week of October, the collection schedule will change for residents and property owners in the beach area of Oak Island: all streets south of the Davis canal.  This schedule will remain in effect through the 3rd week of May, 2018.Garbage every Tuesday, recycling every other Tuesday: Ocean Drive and E. Last briefing for Irma, notice of rescheduled Council meeting

This is the last briefing we'll receive from the National Weather Service on Hurricane Irma (and we take that as a good sign). Here are the key points and some additional information from us: -- We have rescheduled tomorrow night's Council meeting to Tuesday.
