We have received an update from the National Weather Service (NWS) and have some additional info to share: Click here to see the latest briefing from the NWS. The phrase for the day is “guarded optimism.” There is still some uncertainty, so please continue to keep an eye on the track and look for updates. Continue with any basic preparations. Hurricane Irma update — keep watching and make your preparations

We were on the conference call with Brunswick County today -- here’s a summary and some additional information: The National Weather Service will have a better forecast for the track of the storm on Saturday. Please secure your house and belongings and make preparations to leave if that’s what you choose to do. The Town departments are going through our standard preparations. We could see between 4-7 inches of rain, so flash flooding will be a concern. We could feel some winds starting late Sunday night/early Monday morning. Applications being accepted for vacant seat on Town Council

PUBLIC NOTICE – COUNCIL VACANCY Applications are being taken for a vacancy on the Oak Island Town Council (due to the resignation of Council Member Jim Medlin). In order to be considered, applicant must be a full-time resident and a qualified voter in the Town of Oak Island. This seat will be filled by the November election and the person appointed will serve until the new Council member is sworn in (in December). Here's a summary of the latest info from the National Weather Service about a potential Tropical Storm that will affect our area today and tomorrow: • Regardless if this area of low pressure gains tropical characteristics or not, it will still create some impacts to the area late today and tonight into Tuesday morning. • The rainfall threat has increased with the potential for 3-6 inches of rainfall across portions of the northeast SC coast and coastal portions of southeast NC. • A Flash Flood Watch is now in effect until Tuesday morning. • Hazardous maritime conditions expected for boaters as the storm moves ... Latest water test results from Brunswick County

From Brunswick County: Brunswick County has received additional results of testing for GenX in the water supply which continue to show levels below the 140 parts per trillion health goal developed by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. Testing of water samples taken by Brunswick County on July 13 revealed levels of 71.2 parts per trillion in the Northwest Water Treatment Plant’s raw water coming into the plant, and 65.2 parts per trillion in the finished water leaving the plant.  Furthermore, testing of water samples taken by the State of North Carolina on July 13 revealed GenX at a ...
