Update on schedule changes

Town facilities will be closed today. We will open at 10 a.m. on Friday. Please use extreme caution if you have to go out as the roads are icey. If you were planning to stop in and pay your property taxes, just a reminder that you can pay them online at www.official (the town jurisdiction code is 4386). The deadline to pay 2017 real and personal property taxes is Friday, Jan. 5. Payments postmarked on or before Jan. 5 will not be counted as late. Delayed opening Thursday

Rec Center, golf course closing early

Due to predictions for inclement weather, the Rec Center is closing at 4:30 this afternoon. The Oak Island Par 3 Golf Course is closing at noon. We're keeping an eye on the weather before we make any decisions about closing other Town facilities. Continue Reading

Volunteers needed

Are you a retired police officer or firefighter? Do you like meeting new people? Do you need a reason to spend even more time on the beach? The Town of Oak Island is seeking volunteers to help in a variety of ways. We are looking for police volunteers to help enforce parking regulations and firefighters to drive a truck in parades or work community events. Citizens Academy 2018

Would you like to learn more about how your local government operates?  The Town of Oak Island’s second Citizens Academy is being held in February of 2018. We will be able to accommodate the first 25 people who can dedicate their time to a great learning opportunity designed to help people understand how the Town runs its daily operations and projects. Holiday closings, reminder about change in trash collection for Monday

Holiday closings: Town facilities will be closed Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 25 and 26 for Christmas and Monday, January 1 for New Year's. Don't forget the Saturday (Dec 23rd) pickup for trash if your normal pickup is Monday the 25th. It will be on a normal schedule the 1st. Continue Reading

Smoke Alarm Grant Program ongoing

The Oak Island Fire Dept is still participating in the Smoke Alarm Grant Program from the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Please know this is available for those who are within our fire district, in financial need, and who do not have working smoke alarms in their homes. This grant is meant for full-time residences and not for rental properties. Thank you for helping us spread the word to any neighbors, friends or family who may qualify for this service. NC Department of Insurance Accepting Public Comments on Proposed Rate Increase Until Dec. 29

From Brunswick County: Citizens have until Friday, Dec. 29 to submit public comments to the N.C. Department of Insurance regarding a notice from the N.C. Rate Bureau asking for an increase in homeowners insurance rates. While the average statewide requested increase is 18.7 percent, for Brunswick County homeowners, the requested increase is between 23.7 and 25 percent.
