A: No, there is not a Fire Tax in Oak Island. However, there is a Fire Fee. This is an assessment on your yearly property tax statement from Brunswick County. This fee is based on the size of your home, business or unimproved property. This is the primary funding mechanism used for all Brunswick County Fire Departments.

Q: What is the fire protection insurance rating for Oak Island?

A: 5

Q: Is open burning permitted in Oak Island?

A: No. You should review the town ordinances for an exact listing of burning rules.

Q: When I have a medical emergency, who comes?

A: Oak Island Fire and Rescue and Brunswick County EMS. You will receive the highest level of care necessary.

Q: Does the ambulance services cost?

A: Yes, only if you are transported. However, Medicare and most major insurances will cover the expense of an ambulance transport. Do not let your ability to pay for service influence your decision to call for help. You will receive the same professional service regardless of your ability to pay.

Q: What is the role of Yaupon Beach Volunteer Fire Department in Oak Island?

A: Yaupon Beach VFD is an all volunteer fire department which is contracted by the Town of Oak Island to assist with fire protection in the Town. The facility is owned by the Town but leased to the Yaupon Beach VFD. Yaupon VFD is also the primary fire department for Caswell Beach and certain unincorporated areas off of Long Beach Road.
